The library has created STEAM boxes and Literacy Kits that children can take home and use with their families in order to encourage and support learning together. There are 5 STEAM boxes that contain materials, book suggestions, and activity ideas to encourage exploration of STEAM concepts; the toolboxes that house the kits were donated by Perth Home Hardware Home Building Centre. STEAM education is learning through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math and engages children’s creative and critical thinking skills through practical challenges and tinkering projects. The Literacy Kits are kid-sized backpacks filled with research-based activities to support specific skills essential to building literacy strength. “Literacy doesn’t need to be scary,” says Ketsia Snider, the children’s librarian, “my hope is that these kits equip families with activities that make learning fun.” These grab-and-go packs are themed around phonics concepts such as letter knowledge, comprehension, and rhyming. “Our hope is that by providing these STEAM boxes and Literacy Kits, we can provide children with access to tools and skills that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to encounter;” explains Ketsia Snider, “these kits allow children to explore a world of ideas and to develop new skills which they can apply throughout their lives. I want to encourage children to explore, grow, and think outside the box!” To learn more about the services and programs offered by each library, visit or www.perthunionlibrary.ca. |
